Early-stage concept art, particularly sketchy illustrations of interior spaces, can communicate both a physical and emotional story very quickly and effectively. The physical layout of the space is achieved through accurate perspective and sound drafting skills. The emotional intent of the space is achieved by selecting a supportive camera angle (composition), proper lighting (color palette) and appropriate atmosphere. Often the choices are rather experimental, but because the drawings go very quickly, I end up doing several drawings of the same space, or several paintings with varying color palettes in order to see the best options. A few concept illustrations I did for an upcoming film project. One of the most personally rewarding projects I’ve had the pleasure to work on, in both the executive producer and production design roles. What a blast!

Concept Art: ‘Performance’ Sketching

I like ‘live discussion drawing’ because it’s so immediate and often collaborative because others will often whip out their pens and add to it. It’s amazing how solidified an idea will become during the discussion merely because of the fact that someone drew it on paper. Pen, colored in Photoshop CS3. (Total draw time: 3 min?). Hope you like these.
