APM Final cover

I know, it’s old. Remember, I’m trying to slowly resurrect my website after a complete hack n’ sack of the previous site. I created the image above for an Advanced Photoshop Magazine matte painting tutorial (my first) a while back. It made the cover of the issue, and I was very grateful for the boost! Hope you (still) like it as it represents a big milestone for me.

The sketch above is what I submitted for the concept which sold the job and next to that is the final magazine cover, which APM created and which I think turned out really well. It was fun to see it on the stand at Barnes and Noble:)

Lofty rocks

Kind of a surreal thingie I created for issue #32 of Advanced Photoshop Magazine. Created from a few photos from a family excursion to Goblin Valley, UT and random sky images I had laying around.

Incidentally, illustrations of floating rocks with dangling vegetation is certainly not anything particularly new.

‘Performance’ Sketching

I like ‘live discussion drawing’ because it’s so immediate and often collaborative because others will often whip out their pens and add to it. It’s amazing how solidified an idea will become during the discussion merely because of the fact that someone drew it on paper. Pen, colored in Photoshop CS3. (Total draw time: 3 min?). Hope you like these.

These panels were done in 2009 for a cancer research company in California. One of a large series of storyboard illustrations depicting a rather complex gene manipulation procedure (IMHO). I could’a received college credit afterward!

From the vast archives (Part 1)

An illustration done for Advanced Photoshop Magazine, reworked for my new website (as I never really liked the composition I sent them anyway). The hills in the BG and the foreground rocks are just piles of bleached flour I created in my backyard and photographed from various angles, cutting in cliffs and thinking of recipes. Lots of layers (too many) of sky blends, with the ground plane a mix of additional photos of various textures etc. Really the only real painting is in the smoke plume on the right. Couldn’t quite decide whether this environment was supposed to be tropic or icy. I think it turned out icy, which is fine. Hope you like it (again)!

The dozen or so photos that make up this image came from an excursion to Ourzazate, Morocco I enjoyed earlier this spring. There are many rough (or hard) egdes that I have yet to incorporate, but I think I’ve lost interest. I hope you enjoy it…

The funny thing about this one is that the big mountain in the photos is actually a 3′ high little mount of rock. I got down on the ground to take the picture because the rock was so cool.

Just when you thought I was down for the count!

Having had my old website hacked into oblivion, I will now give this one a try after more than a year off-line. Please stay tuned for nearly daily developments and improvements to this blog, as I try to upload old stuff, display new stuff, and generally rejoin the World in what I hope will be positive creative uibelification for all.
